Campaign for the Curry School

Phase III – Transforming Education

Thomas Jefferson bustFor more than 100 years, the Curry School of Education has worked to advance Thomas Jefferson’s vision for public education as a means to enhance the quality of life for all citizens. That vision takes shape today in the Curry School’s commitment to learning – a commitment to discover innovative educational strategies, to create new knowledge through research, and to prepare professionals who will catalyze change in American public schools.

Situated in Mr. Jefferson’s university, the Curry School is uniquely positioned to contribute new ideas and solutions to these challenges. We have an eminent faculty whose expertise spans the spectrum of education-related disciplines, and our teacher education programs are ranked consistently in the top 10 by U.S. News & World Report. We are grounding our work in the best scientific thinking and evidence, so the knowledge and innovations we produce have lasting and demonstrable effects.

At the beginning of the Campaign for the Curry School back in 2004, we set a goal of $55 million, which seemed aggressive at the time. We are not aware of any other education school ever having raised that much in a campaign. Yet, thanks to some very generous friends and alumni, we met our goal in December 2010, two years ahead of schedule. Nearly $40 million of the $55 million was slated for a new building—Bavaro Hall—in which we are now happily settled. We have a beautiful and multifunctional facility that positions us better than ever before in our history to achieve our mission of transforming education.

Transforming education is a massive undertaking that will require resources once considered unattainable by a school of education. Our goal is $123 million—more than twice the goal we just achieved. We must endeavor to make large-scale impacts on teachers and schools. With the help of individual alumni and friends, as well as corporate, federal, and private foundation support, we will marshal our efforts around the following priority areas:

  • Building Better Teachers
  • Transforming Early Childhood Education
  • Entrepreneurial Education Leadership
  • Children’s Learning and Wellbeing
