Personal Statement

My primary teaching responsibilities are in Curriculum and Instruction and the preparation of future elementary school teachers. The majority of classes I teach include a field experience, and I enjoy working with teachers in the neighboring school systems. I feel it is important to have active and on-going partnerships with the schools and encourage lively and on-going discussions with practicing teachers as we continually improve the education of future teachers. I also have worked with several student groups including the Student Virginia Education Association (SVEA)  and with three groups of the Jefferson Public Citizens program as their faculty advisor; the SVEA has received recognition as an outstanding chapter state-wide for several years.

Research Interests

I have a long-standing interest in the history of teacher education and have recently completed a history of the Curry School of Education, The Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia, 1905-2005: Preparing Men and Women for leadership in Scientific Educational Work. Additionally, I am interested in the ways in which preservice students can positively impact the learning of the students they work with in their early field placements and have designed several research projects that focus on this area.
