I have been at UVA since 1992, and I teach in the areas of Kinesiology for Individuals with Disabilities (adapted physical education [APE]) and motor development. Specific coursework that I teach includes Kinesiology for Individuals with Development Disabilities, Physical Education for Children with Severe Disabilities, Sports, Recreation and Camping for Children with Disabilities, Seminar in APE, and Motor Development. I also am the co-director of the Masters Program in APE here at UVA, and I am the primary supervisor for our Masters students during their practicum in the Albemarle County Public Schools. I also have contacts and have created practicum opportunities for our students at the Virginia Institute for Autism, Little Keswick School, Charlottesville Area Special Olympics, and the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind. My major consulting work has been with Special Olympics, Inc., helping them create and implement the Motor Activities Training Program—a special sports program for children and adults with severe disabilities. As a hobby I enjoy coaching locally in youth basketball, soccer, and volleyball programs.
My primary area of research has been on studying the philosophy of including students with disabilities in general physical education as well as the practical aspects of helping general physical educators include students with disabilities in general physical education. Some specific studies included determining attitudes of children without disabilities towards peers with disabilities in general physical education and youth sports, the effects of a disability awareness program on improving attitudes of children without disabilities towards peers with disabilities in general physical education, and the use of teacher assistants and peers to facilitate the inclusion of children with disabilities in general physical education. I also am the author of A Teacher’s Guide to Including Students with Disabilities in General Physical Education (now in its 4th edition), and I am the co-author of three other books on various sub-topics related to adapted physical education.
