Instructional Technology

The Instructional Technology (IT) program prepares students to be leaders in any environment involving learning, ranging from K-12 schools, museum education, adult training and development in business and industry, public/non-profit training, higher education, and life-long learning. The program recognizes IT is increasingly important in helping professionals re-train, re-tool, and re-skill as careers change multiple times over a lifetime. It therefore strives to prepare students to not only address the issues of today but also the issues of tomorrow.

Technology, culture, and diversity are virtually inseparable. As such, diversity plays a large role in the projects IT students design both inside and outside the classroom. The IT program frames all of its initiative with diversity in mind and stresses how technologies must reach and be effective for all populations. Specifically, projects in IT initiatives like the Virginia Center for Digital History as well as the Science, Humanities, and Arts Network of Technological Initiatives celebrate the past and present diversity in IT and in our community. Further, classes like Multicultural Education and Advanced Instructional Design encourage students to explore rich, diverse backgrounds.

Degrees Offered

  • Ph.D. in Instructional Technology
  • Ed.D. in Instructional Technology
  • Ed.S. in Instructional Technology
  • M.Ed. in Instructional Technology

“The IT program here at the Curry School is top notch! The program provides students with a great academic program, which is complimented by the amazingly talented and caring people in it. People have clearly worked hard to create a learning community that is both supportive and cutting edge. It’s hard not to feel at home in a place that offers students the opportunity to be part of something special.”

Program Overview

The graduate curriculum in Instructional Technology at UVA provides its students with exposure to a wide range of emerging technologies, while ensuring the basic competencies required of all practitioners. Master’s and doctoral graduates of the program have found career opportunities as instructional designers, interactive developers, information architects, training and technology coordinators, and change/process management specialists in business, industry, education, and government. Others go on to become university faculty members specializing in these areas.
