Curry School of Education

Off-Grounds Transfer Students:  Apply for admission to UVA through the University's Office of Undergraduate Admission and meet criteria 2,3, 5, 6 listed below.

On-Grounds Students:

To be granted permission to enter the five-year program, you must:

1. be enrolled as a second-year student in the College of Arts and Sciences,
2. have completed EDIS 2010 and 2880 or VCCS equivalent coursework,
3. demonstrate academic success (cumulative GPA of 2.7, 3.0  GPA in your College major),
4. submit the  Permission to Enroll application to the Office of Teacher Education (326 Bavaro Hall) by February 15,
5. provide test scores that meet criteria set by the Virginia Dept. of Education in ONE of the following:

• PRAXIS I:  178 math, 175 writing or 532 composite score OR
• SATs taken prior to 4/1/95--score of 1000, with at least 450 verbal, 510 math; if taken after 4/1/95--score of 1100, with at least 530 verbal, 530 math OR
• ACTs taken prior to 4/1/95--score of 1100, with at least 450 verbal, 510 math; if taken after 4/1/95--composite score of 24, with at least 22 math, 48 English Plus Reading Score OR
• VCLA: Reading and Writing as an optional assessment for the PRAXIS I reading and writing tests (writing subtest of 235, reading subtest of 235, composite score of 470) in combination with qualifying math scores from SATs, ACTs, or PRAXIS 1, and

6. show good progress toward meeting GENERAL REQUIREMENTS through coursework or AP credits in:

• Natural Sciences and Math (12 hrs.) a combination of science and math (MATH 1150 and 1160 are highly recommended) 
• English Composition (6 hrs.) same as the College of Arts & Sciences (must include second writing requirement)
• Humanities (6 hrs.) same as the College of Arts & Sciences
• Non-Western Studies (3 hrs.) same as the College of Arts & Sciences
• Historical Studies (6 hrs.) 3 credits of American History (HIUS 2001 or 2002); 3 credits Western Civilization or World History. (List of Approved Courses)
• Social Sciences (6 hrs.) Psychology/Sociology/Anthropology/Linguistics/Economics
• Foreign Language (0-14 hrs.) same as the College of Arts & Sciences

NOTE: Permission to Enroll allows you to sign up for licensure classes offered through the Curry School of Education.  Formal admission to the program (advancement to graduate status) occurs midway through one's fourth year at UVA.  Advancement is based on academic performance in College and Curry classes, performance in area schools (field work), and performance on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).   

February 1 of their second year of enrollment at the University.

All Master of Teaching students are required to complete 5 credits in the Curry Participant Pool in each year of their program.

Students in the five-year program must meet College and Curry requirements to earn dual degrees.  As noted in the sample course outline below, requirements in Curry include coursework, field placements, Graduate Record Exams (GREs) and state-mandated exams--the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA), the Praxis Series Reading for Virginia Educators (RVE), the PRAXIS II exam in Elementary Education, and the Virginia Reading Assessment (VRA) offered through Pearson Testing (http://www.va.nesinc.com).  Dates by which passing scores must be submitted to the Office of Teacher Education are listed in the "Course Overview" that follows.

All program completers must submit applications for graduation to the College of Arts and Sciences AND to the Curry School (Office of Admission: 106 Bavaro Hall). As noted in the course outline, materials required  for Curry include an application for licensure.

All new and continuing undergraduates at the University of Virginia may be eligible for federal loans, grants, scholarships, work study and other categories of need-based financial aid.  We encourage you to submit your application for financial aid the first of March, so the Office of Financial Aid can provide you with an estimate of your eligibility for the upcoming academic year.  Policies related to financial aid change upon entrance to the graduate program in the 5th year of study.  To determine your eligibility and procedures for applying for aid, visit the University's Student Financial Aid website.  Students enrolled in the BAMT or PGMT program are also eligible for numerous scholarships and awards offered through the Curry Foundation.  These are advertised in December; several are earmarked for TED students.

Completion time is five years.  Students who enter the University with a number of courses and/or AP and IB credits, however, may accelerate the program and finish in 4 1/2 years.  Plan carefully with your advisor in the College and your advisor in Curry if interested in this option. 

Full or Part Time:

Students studying for the BAMT are full-time students.

Print this course overview and use it to track your progress in Curry.  Your advisor will want to see this document each time you meet for advising.  Requirements must be completed during the semesters listed.

3rd YEAR

Fall Semester:

1. __ Declare a major in the College by the start of the semester
2. __ EDLF 5010: Childhood Learning & Development (3 cr.)
3. __ EDIS 3881: Field experience (1 cr.)
4. __ EDIS 51X0: Characteristics of (EBD/LD/ID) (1 cr. each)-- fall or spring
5. __ Continue working on General Requirements listed above in "Prerequisites and Admissions Requirements".
6. __ EDIS 3450:Teaching with Technology (2 cr.)--fall or spring 

Spring Semester

1. __ EDIS 5041: Behavior Managment (3 cr) --fall or spring
2. __ EDIS 3887: Field Experience, special ed. (1 cr.)
3. __ EDIS 5000: Exceptional Learner  (3 cr.)--spring or summer
4. __ By April 15, complete 5 credits in the Curry Participant Pool.
5. __ By May 1, take and pass the Virginia Communications & Literacy Assessment (VCLA).   Print a copy of your test results for your personal records.  You will need these when applying for licensure at the conclusion of your program of studies.

Summer

1. __ Sign up to take GREs prior to September 1, so you can retake the exam if your scores do not meet Curry minimums of at or above 450/150 (verbal), 530/145 (quantitative), 4.0 (analytical writing).  Submit official test scores through ETS.  The University's institutional code is 5820; there is no school code.

 
4th YEAR

Fall Semester

1. __ EDIS 5010:Curriculum and Instruction (3 cr.) (NOTE: This requirement moved to 4th year from 3rd year beginning with the MT Class of 2016)
2. __ EDIS 5222: Reading Development for Special Populations (3 cr.)
3. __ EDIS 5330: Science in the Elementary School (3 cr.)
4. __ EDIS 4881: Field Experience, elementary section  (1 cr.)
5. __ EDIS 5340: Social Studies in the Elementary Schools (3 cr.)--fall or spring semester
6. __ EDIS 5060: Math Instruction for Elem. & Sped. (3 cr.).--fall or spring semester-- or -- EDIS5320: Math in the Elem. School
7. __ By December 1 , submit your Advancement to Graduate Status Application (available in the Office of Teacher Education).  Criteria for advancement are satisfactory performance in all field experiences and Curry classes, a 3.0 GPA in content major in the College, a cumulative GPA of 2.7, and satisfactory performance on GREs.
8. __ By December 1, submit your Teaching Associateship Application (a form on which you request a student teaching placement), available in the Office of Teacher Education.

Spring Semester

1. __ EDIS 5230: Reading Diagnosis & Remediation for Reading Instruction (3 cr.) 
2. __ EDIS 5231:  Reading Diagnosis & Remediation for Reading Instruction Lab (1 cr.)
3. __ EDIS 4887: Field Experience, Sped. (1 cr.)
4. __ EDIS 5040: Psychoeducational Assessment (3 cr.)--fall or spring semester
5. __ EDIS 5140: Methods of Instruction & Collaboration in Sped (3 cr.)
6. __ EDIS 5141: IEP and Transition Planning (1 cr.)
7. __ Complete the online module Child Abuse and Neglect: Recognizing, Reporting, and Responding for Educators.  Print out the certificate of completion and make one copy for the Office of Teacher Education.  Keep the original with your personal records. You will need this when you apply for licensure.
8. __ By April 15, complete 5 credits in the Curry Participant Pool.
9. __ By July 1, take and pass (minimum score of 157) the Reading Praxis Series Reading for Virginia Educators (RVE): Elementary and Special Education Teachers Assessment.  Print a copy of your test results for your personal records.  You will need this when you apply for licensure.

Summer Session (if accelerating the program)

1. __ Register for coursework on the Summer Session website.
2. __ EDIS 7991: Field Project (3 cr.)--a portion of the course will be completed in the fall.
3. __ EDIS 7100: Contemporary  Issues (3 cr.).

5th YEAR

Fall Semester: (No courses, other than those listed below, may be taken during the term.)

1. __ By August 1, take and pass the Praxis II Elementary Education: Content Knowledge exam offered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS).  Print a copy of your test results for your personal records.
2. __ If graduating in December, apply for graduation both in the College and in Curry by October 1.  Submit your Curry application (make sure to list primary and secondary endorsements, if applicable) to Curry's Office of Admission (106 Bavaro Hall).  Attach the following materials, using a paperclip:  copies of test scores and the "College Verification Form" and "Application for Initial Licensure" found in the online pdf document "Application for a Virginia License".  Make sure the address you list on your licensure paperwork is the location where you will be receiving mail between December and February.
3. __ If planning to enroll as a part-time (fewer than 12 cr.) during the spring, complete a Change of Status form and submit it to the Teacher Education Office by October 15.
4. __ EDIS 5881: Teaching Associateship--Elementary (6 cr.).  Because you are earning a second endorsement, the placement coordinator will provide a split placement.
5. __ EDIS 5887: Teaching Associateship--SPED (6 cr.)
6. __ EDIS 5877: Seminar: Teaching Associateship--Elementary (3 cr.)

Spring Semester

1. __ If graduating in May, apply for graduation both in the College and in Curry no later than February 1.  On the Curry form, be sure to list primary and secondary endorsements (if relevant).  Take your education application to Curry's Office of Admission (106 Bavaro Hall).  Use a paperclip to attach copies of test scores, and the "College Verification Form" and "Application for Initial Licensure"  documents found in the online pdf  "Application for a Virginia License".  Make sure the address you list on the licensure application is the one where you will be receiving mail between May and August.

5. __ Finish College requirements

When the Office of Admissions receives word from the Registrar that degrees have been conferred, personnel will sign off on your application for licensure and mail all materials to you, so that you can order an official transcript and work directly with the VDOE to obtain licensure.  The Curry Admissions Office will record your areas of endorsement on the enrolled student screen.  That way, if you move to another location, they can use that information when you request a college verification form for another state.
