Degrees

BA/MT Special Education General Curriculum-Secondary

The Special Education General Curriculum/Secondary Education Program is designed to prepare candidates for teaching as both special education (with an emphasis on inclusive placements) in K-12 classrooms and as secondary teachers (6th-12th grades) in an academic content area.  Program completers are eligible for licensure with endorsements in both Special Education-General Curriculum and a specific content area of secondary education.  Students participate in the field practica with experiences across secondary grade levels and in special education placements across elementary to secondary grades.

The special education endorsement aims at developing expertise to work with students with mild/moderate disabilities. The secondary endorsement leads to a designation of highly qualified and allows the teacher to lead a general education classroom in the specified content area.  The program offers maximum opportunity for employment and career development.

Students leave the dual degree program with a B.A. or B.S. degree from the College and a M.T. degree from Curry.  Diplomas are awarded simultaneously at the end of the five-year program.

Check the Teacher Education Student Handbook for program policies and procedures.

Degree Requirements

All Master of Teaching students are required to complete 5 credits in the Curry Participant Pool in each year of their program.

Students in the five-year program must meet College and Curry requirements to earn dual degrees.  Requirements in Curry include coursework, field placements, Graduate Record Exams (GREs), the state-mandated exams--Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA), and the PRAXIS II exam in the secondary content area, and the Virginia Reading Assessment (VRA) offered through Pearson Testing (http://www.va.nesinc.com).

Program completers must submit applications for graduation to the College of Arts and Sciences AND to the Curry School (Office of Admission 106 Bavaro Hall).  As noted in the Course Outline, materials required for Curry include an application for licensure.

Funding Opportunities

All new and continuing undergraduates at the University of Virginia may be eligible for federal loans, grants, scholarships, work study and other categories of need-based financial aid.  We encourage you to submit your application for financial aid by March 1, so the Office of Financial Aid can provide an estimate of your eligibility for the upcoming academic year. Policies related to financial aid change upon entrance to the graduate program in the 5th year of study.  To determine your eligibility and procedures for applying for aid, visit the University’s Student Financial Aid website.

Students in the BAMT or PGMT program are eligible for numerous scholarships and awards offered through the Curry Foundation.  These are advertised in December; several are earmarked for TED students.

Typical Length of Study

Five years.  At the end of five years, students receive both their undergraduate and graduate degrees.  Diplomas are awarded simultaneously.
