This program allows you to earn a Baccalaureate degree from the College of Arts and Sciences (B.A. or B.S.) and a Master of Teaching (M.T.) degree from the Curry School of Education. Degrees are awarded simultaneously at the end of your studies. You earn licensure with endorsement in English Education, grades 6-12. The state-approved program follows guidelines prepared by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) special Committees on Teacher Preparation and Certification.
Enrollees investigate the historical, social, and psychological context for teaching English at the secondary level, explore concepts of curriculum and instructional models, and pursue in-depth study of effective methodologies for teaching language, literature, and writing. The M.T. course of study involves integrated conceptualization of secondary English curriculum, planning, instruction and assessment. Many opportunities exist for individual direction, both within course parameters and as independent study coursework.
You may add a second area of endorsement (e.g., English as a Second Language, Special Education) to your program of studies. If interested in this option, seek permission from your Curry advisor and the Office of Teacher Education as soon as you are offered permission to enroll.
Review the Teacher Education Student Handbook for a description of policies and procedures.
