B.S.Ed.-Kinesiology: 4-year Major

Kinesiology refers to the study of movement and is a multifaceted field of study in which movement or physical activity is the intellectual focus. Physical activity includes exercising for improvement of health and fitness; learning movement skills; and engaging in activities of daily living, work, sport, dance, and play. It involves the general population as well as special groups such as children and older adults; people with disabilities, injuries, or disease; and athletes.

The Kinesiology major is a four-year undergraduate program in the Curry School of Education leading to a B.S.Ed. degree. Students who enter the program with dual enrollment, AP and IB credits may opt to accelerate their studies, earning a B.S.Ed. and M.Ed in five years.  Accelerated study is available in Exercise Physiology, Adapted Physical Education and Health and Physical Education Teaching.  Students interested in this option must apply to one of the M.Ed. programs by October 15 of their fourth year. GRE scores are due before the end of fall semester.  An admission decision is made before the beginning of Spring semester.

All students take the same core courses, such as anatomy, exercise physiology, motor development and contemporary issues.  However, they have opportunities to shape coursework according to career goals. A faculty member from kinesiology serves as the academic advisor, assisting students with the selection of classes and guiding them as they determine optimal settings for gaining hands-on experiences in clinical, athletic, or school settings.

 

Program Life

The Kinesiology major is a direct-admit program.  Students from high school apply directly to Kinesiology through the University's Office of Undergraduate Admission.  Once enrolled, students take courses both in the College of Arts and Sciences and in the Curry School of Education.  Students are expected to  meet all general education requirements in their first two years, so they can concentrate on Kinesiology courses in years three and four.  In addition to coursework, students in the Kinesiology program have a practicum requirement. Prerequisites and Admission Requirements

High school students should have a strong GPA and competitive SAT scores.  When completing the Common Application, they must be sure to indicate an interest in Kinesiology and adhere to application deadlines set by the University's  Office of Undergraduate Admission. To begin the application, click on the APPLY NOW button on the right side of the page.

Current UVa students who are interested in transferring to the Curry School can apply to the Kinesiology by the following deadlines:  June 15, October 15 and February 1.  Space in the program is limited.  Preference will be given to students who are taking/have taken Biology 2010-2040 and/or Biology 2060/2070, are making good progress toward completing general education requirements, and performing at levels that will make them competitive for graduate schools in exercise science, medicine, and allied health fields. Current students should print out their advising transcript from SIS and attach it to the internal application for admission. The application can be accessed by clinking on the Intra-UVA Transfers button on the right side of this screen. Turn materials into Curry's Office of Admission and Student Services, 106 Bavaro Hall.

Third-year students and older are not eligible to major in Kinesiology, but are advised to discuss the possibility of applying to one of the masters programs. 

Transfer applicants from other universities need to follow procedures outlined by the University's Office of Undergraduate Admission. Applicants must indicate an interest in Kinesiology on the Common Application.  Preference will be given to students who are working towards the completion of the general education requirements, particularly science and physiology courses. Application Due Date

High school students and transfer applicants from other universities must follow deadlines set by the University’s Office of Undergraduate Admission. Current UVA students must apply by February 1, June 15, October 15 to transfer into the program.  Admissions decisions are typically made within 2-3 weeks; admitted students begin their studies the following semester.

Degree Requirements

To earn a Bachelor of Science in Education (BSEd) degree, students must:

  1. Earn 120 credits of course work within an  8-semester period, maintaining at least a C average or grade point average of 2.0.
  2. Meet all General Requirements.
  3. Complete Kinesiology Core Courses at UVA, unless a policy exemption has been approved.
  4. Meet all elective and other practica requirements.

Credits earned prior to admission:  A maximum of 60 credits may be earned prior to matriculation.  These may include transfer credit approved by the University, AP credits, International College-level exams, and dual enrollment coursework taken in high school. (The University does not award credits or exemptions from requirements via the College Level Examination Program,)

Credits earned after admission: Students may take coursework at another institution in the U.S. and transfer credits to UVA.  To do so, they must seek permission before studying elsewhere. They do so by submitting the Request for Transfer of Undergraduate Credit from U.S. Institutions form. If interested in studying abroad, students must seek permission to do so using the Curry School's Policy Exception Request form.

Maintaining Academic Standing: See the Undergraduate Record for academic policies and procedures.  As noted in that document, any grade below a B- in a 500 or higher course must be repeated. Credit will be awarded for each course only once. To remain in good standing, a student must complete at least Iat least 12 credits of graded work (or S/U work if engaged in practica), with at least a 1.800 semester average and no more than one grade below C- (or C/NC). A student will be placed on academic probation after any semester in which good standing is not attained.

Suspension involves enforced withdrawal from the Curry School of Education. A student placed on probation in any semester may be suspended if he or she does not regain good standing at the end of the next semester. A student who has been suspended may apply to the Office of Admissions and Student Affairs of the Curry School of Education for readmission after one regular semester or one summer session has elapsed since the date of suspension. If readmitted, the student will be on probation and will be suspended again after one semester unless the cumulative grade point average for all courses completed is above 2.000.

Curry General Education Requirements (Competency Requirements – 36 credits
(Additional credits beyond the school requirement will be added to electives)

1. First Writing Requirement: ENWR 1510, 1507/1508 or equivalent Exemptions include score of 720 or higher on the Writing portion of the SAT, score of 5 on the English Advanced Placement Test

2. Second Writing Requirement: Requires a grade of C- or better. To meet the Second Writing Requirement, a class must:

  • Assign at least two writing assignments in English totaling 4,000 words (20 pages) or more independent of quizzes and final examinations
  • Be taught by a faculty member who provides extensive feedback on a student’s writing
  • Be taken at the University of Virginia. (Advanced placement credit, advanced standing, dual enrollment credit or credit transferred from another university will not satisfy this requirement.)
  • Be a Curry course designated as meeting the requirement (see suggestions below) OR be an Arts and Sciences course found using the drop-down menu on SIS in the Course Search

3. Humanities: 12 Credits.  May include Literature, Fine Arts, or Moral Philosophical, Foreign Language and Religious Perspectives. (Credits from writing courses may be applicable to this requirement.)

4. Social Sciences: 9 Credits. May include History, Anthropology (course in Curry or Arts and Sciences) , Economics, Politics, Psychology; Sociology, African American Studies, Linguistics and Studies in Women and Gender.  (Note: if you intend to pursue a health-related graduate program, most will require you to have taken at least one psychology and one sociology course.)

5. Natural Sciences: 12 Credits.  Must include courses in 2 different departments. Includes Math, Statistics, Physics, Biology, Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, and Astronomy. Required courses for Kinesiology include:

  • BIOLOGY 2010-2040 (10 Credits)
  • BIOLOGY 2060-2070 (6 Credits) 
  • MATH 1210 or 1310 Calculus (3 credits)

6. Cultural Literacy: 3 credits.  Several Curry courses will meet this requirement.  During fall 2013 semester, for example, EDLF 5000--Multicultural Education is only one of many options. Courses focused on comparative education and global studies or study abroad also meet this requirement. Check with your advisor if you have questions.

7. Residence Requirement:  A recipient of a B.S.Ed. degree from the Curry School must have completed at least four semesters of full-time (12 credits) study at the University of Virginia while enrolled in the Curry School of Education. Exceptions for emergency situations may only be granted with the advisor’s and dean’s permission. In addition, all students must be full-time (12 credits minimum) during all semesters, except the final one (9 credits minimum).

The practicum is worth 3 credits and is graded S/U. It allows you to learn more about the field of study and gain practical experiences. If you elect to fulfill the practicum during the summer, register through the Summer Session Office for EDHS 4460.  Credits for the practicum will be counted only once. That is, you cannot do the same clinical work and get UVa credit for both a Practicum and an Independent Study.

An instructor will provide you with a list of possible sites and contact information for each of the options. Following guidelines provided, you will contact someone at the site, explain the nature of the placement, and set up a schedule for site visits. You will notify our instructor about the location and schedule for the practicum. At least 120 contact hours are required; this amounts to about 10 hrs/week during a semester. You must record specific information about the experience on forms provided by your instructor. Depending on the site where you work, you may be required to engage in additional activities (e.g., inservices, departmental meetings, Universal Precautions, CPR training).

Funding Opportunities

Students may apply for federal financial aid and work-study opportunities through the Office of Student Financial Services. There are also some paid positions for experienced students in practica sites. Check with your advisor about this option

Typical Length of Study

Students must meet all undergraduate degree requirements in 8 semesters.  Accelerated study and early entry into relevant masters degrees is possible.

Semester of Entry:

Admitted students enter the program one semester after their application is reviewed.

Full or Part Time:

This is a full-time program of studies.
