Degrees

Ed.D. in School Psychology

The Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia offers a doctoral degree in School Psychology through the Curry Programs in Clinical and School Psychology. Designed to train leadership personnel for the practice of school psychology, the program is designed for experienced school psychologists who seek to broaden their expertise.

Prerequisites and Admission Requirements

Applicants must hold an Ed.S. degree in School Psychology or a masters degree equivalent (60+ credit hours) and have a minimum of two years of successful experience as a school psychologist. Applicants must also demonstrate academic ability and expressed intent to return to positions of leadership and practice in school psychology. Qualified minority applicants are especially encouraged to apply. Due to the highly individualized nature of the program, we typically limit admissions to 1-2 students per year.

Application packet consists of:
• Application form *
• Official transcripts of all previous undergraduate and graduate work
• Graduate Record Examination Scores
• Two letters of recommendation
• A nonrefundable $60 application fee

Send all materials, including letters of recommendation, to:
Office of Admissions and Student Affairs
Curry School of Education
Box 400261
Charlottesville, VA 22904-4261

If you are sending materials by overnight mail, the street address is:
Office of Admissions and Student Affairs
Curry School of Education
405 Emmet Street
Charlottesville, VA 22903

Do not send materials directly to the Curry Programs in School Psychology. All applications are assembled and processed by the Curry School of Education Office of Admissions and only forwarded to us when they are certified to be complete, sending items to us directly may actually delay your application.

GRADUATE RECORD EXAMINATION (GRE)

The Curry School of Education requires the GRE Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing tests for admission to all graduate programs (no exceptions). The psychology subject test is encouraged but not required. All GRE scores must be current (within five years of the date of application). Examinations should be taken as early as possible so that scores will be received prior to the application deadline.

Information on GREs may be obtained directly from the Educational Testing Service.
Institution code: 5820

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

All international students for whom English is not their native tongue must take and submit TOEFL scores. A score of 600 is generally considered minimal in the Curry School of Education.

For further admissions information: Contact Dr. Antoinette Thomas, Director, Curry School of Education, University of Virginia, Box 400270, Charlottesville, VA 22904-4270, (434) 924-6958.

Application Due Date

Applications must be postmarked no later than December 15 for admission to the fall semester.

Degree Requirements

Students must take a minimum of 36 semester hours of coursework, including six hours in research/evaluation. Two “supporting areas” (minors) must also be completed, each consisting of at least 12 hours of coursework. Possible supporting areas include Early Childhood, Counseling, Administration/Supervision, Special Education, and others. Six hours of practicum/internship also are required. A student’s course of study will be tailored to meet individualized training needs. Students must pass written doctoral comprehensive examinations covering school psychology and the two supporting areas. As much credit as possible will be granted for previous coursework and training.

One summer will be devoted to enhancing knowledge base and clinical skills relevant to school psychology. The full-time academic year and the second summer will be spent completing required coursework for the doctorate. The second year will be devoted primarily to completion of a dissertation. This may be an empirical study, a program development and/or evaluation, or another relevant project as determined by the student in consultation with faculty. Students may consider completing their dissertation project with a number of faculty in the Curry School of Education. Prospective students are encouraged to visit other department websites to explore the diversity of research areas available through the program.
