The Education Specialist program is a planned 30 credit (minimum) post-master’s program of study. For students who seek the pk-12 Administration and Supervision certification, the Ed.S. program includes 30 credits of core coursework and 3 credits of an administrative internship. (See The Administrative Internship Handbook). At lease twenty-four credits must be taken on Grounds.

Prerequisites and Admission Requirements

master’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university;

strong record as a student as documented in official transcripts of all previous undergraduate and graduate work;

three years of teaching experience;

a Virginia teaching license (if you wish to be recommended for endorsement in Administration and Supervision);

online application for admission;
-
official score reports for the Graduate Record Examination (scores must be less than five years old);
-
two letters of recommendation from professionals who can attest to the applicant's promise as a graduate student and a professional educator;

current résumé; and
-
statement of professional goals.
Application Due Date
6/1 for fall semester entry
10/15 for spring semester entry
2/1 for summer semester entry
All components of the application must be received by the due date.
Degree Requirements
To earn an Education Specialist degree, the following minimum requirements must be met:

Of the 30 course credits, 24 must be taken after admission to the program. The administrative internship must also be completed after admission. At least 60 credits of graduate work must be completed prior to the awarding of the Ed.S. degree.

The student must pass a comprehensive written examination.
Typical Length of Study
By taking 2 courses per semester, students can complete the course of study in 6 semesters and the internship during the seventh semester.
Full or Part Time:
All students are part-time, working professionals. Courses are offered on an alternating annual basis during fall, spring, and summer sessions.
