Off-Grounds Ed.S. in Administration & Supervision

The Education Specialist program is a planned 30 credit (minimum) post-master’s program of study.  For students who seek the pk-12 Administration and Supervision endorsement, the Ed.S. program includes 30 credits of core coursework and 3 credits of an administrative internship.

Off-site locations of study include the Hampton Roads Center, Northern Virginia Center, and  the Richmond Center.

This program is currently offered in partnership with the School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) but will be transitioned fully to the Curry School on July 1, 2012.  Click here for more information about the SCPS-Curry transition.

Prerequisites and Admission Requirements

  • master’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university;
  • strong record as a student as documented in official transcripts of all previous undergraduate and graduate work;
  • three years of teaching experience and a Virginia teaching license;
  • online application for admission;
  • official score reports for the Graduate Record Examination (scores must be less than five years old);
  • two letters of recommendation from professionals who can attest to the applicant's promise as a graduate student and a professional educator;
  • current résumé; and
  • statement of professional goals.

Application Due Date

6/1 for fall semester entry
10/15 for spring semester entry
3/15 for summer semester entry

All components of the application must be received by the due date.

Degree Requirements

To earn an Education Specialist degree, the following minimum requirements must be met:

  • Of the 30 course credits, 24 must be taken after admission to the program. The administrative internship must also be completed after admission.  At least 60 credits of graduate work must be completed prior to the awarding of the Ed.S. degree.
  • The student must pass a comprehensive written examination.
  • The student must apply for graduation.
  • The student must apply for endorsement in Administration and Supervision.

Funding Opportunities

Students may apply for federal financial Aid through the University's Office of Student Financial Services.

Typical Length of Study

Students who take one or two courses per semester, including summer session,  have finished the program in 2 or 1 1/2 years.

Sample Jobs After Graduation

Most students pursue assistant principal positions after completion of the program but some step directly into principal or central office positions.
