Prerequisites and Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the requirements for admission to the MEd program. These include successful completion of a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, two recommendations solicited through the online application from faculty and/or employers, a goal statement, and unofficial transcripts (updated to the application). Official test scores from ETS must be sent to the University of Virginia (5820) by the application deadlines.

Prospective students may be admitted by submitting GRE scores or by using one of the alternative procedures described below:

Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores must meet Curry targets for admission—450/150 verbal, 530/145 math, 4.0 writing.

TOEFL or IELTS scores (required only for international students) must be no more than two years old.  Expected scores include paper-based TOEFL (600), computer-based TOEFL (250), IELTS (7.0), IBT TOEFL (at least 22 in writing, 22 in speaking, 23 in reading, and 23 in listening, for a total of 90).

Alternative Procedures (in place of GRE scores; choose one of the options below):

Degree Requirements

Students must complete a minimum of 30 credits at the 5000 level or above. Up to 6 graduate credits taken prior to admission may be counted toward the degree, if not counted toward the applicant’s undergraduate degree and if relevant to the program of curriculum and instruction. Program completers must also pass a comprehensive exam.

MEd students are required to successfully complete 30 hours of graduate study at the 5000 level or beyond. Fifteen (15) credits must be earned within the core requirements from each of the four “pillars” of the program which cover Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment, Diversity . The additional 15 credits are earned from the student's chosen focus area of Reading, Gifted Education, English Language Learners, or Instructional Technology.

Transfer Credits

A maximum of 6 credit hours can be transferred in to the program if the course is determined by the advisor to meet a number of conditions (e.g., graduate-level, is equivalent in rigor and focus to a course offered in the program of study, the student earned a grade of B- or higher, and the course was successfully completed less than 5 years from the date of admission to the program).

Class Sizes

Most of the courses at Curry offer small class sizes and a low faculty to student ratio. The small class sizes allow for personal connections among faculty and students.

Typical Length of Study

Students may enroll on a full- or part-time basis. All requirements, including the comprehensive exam, must be completed within a 5-year period. Students enrolled on a full-time basis typically complete program requirements during a single academic year.

Semester of Entry:

Students apply to enter the MEd program in summer, fall, or spring sessions.

Full or Part Time:

Full- or part-time enrollment is available.

Funding Opportunities

Students who maintain at least consistent half-time enrollment may apply for federal financial aid. Sample Jobs After Graduation

Curriculum & Instruction careers range from curriculum development to teacher training. They include assessing classroom offerings, helping to meet school goals, and working to implement changes in curriculum. This type of educator can enrich students’ lives by researching new methods of instruction and observing current teaching models to determine what is, and is not, working, then replacing flawed curriculum to improve the quality of schools.

Curriculum development is essential in PreK–12 public or private schools, adult education programs, alternative schools, charter schools, community or technical colleges, continuing education programs, and state education departments. Curry graduates have also taken positions in government agencies, foundations, museums, and a number of military personnel have assumed instructional positions at military training sites.

While this degree does not yield licensure required for most public school teaching assignments, it does provide students with a broad-based exploration of topics related to curriculum, instruction, assessment and the diverse context of learners from young children through adults in traditional and non-traditional learning experiences.
