Off-Grounds M.Ed. in Social Foundations (NoVA)

This program allows enrollees to earn a Master of Education degree.

This program is currently offered in partnership with the School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) but will be transitioned fully to the Curry School on July 1, 2012.  Click here for more information about the SCPS-Curry transition.

Prerequisites and Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the general requirements for admission to MEd programs.  These include two recommendations from faculty and/or employers, a goal statement, and GRE scores that meet Curry criteria for admission--450 verbal, 530 math, 4.0 writing (old exam) or equivalent scores on the new exam. Recommendations must be solicited through Curry’s online application. International students must also submit TOEFL scores. As noted on the admissions website, official transcripts are also required. All materials must be submitted by the application deadline. Follow guidelines on the admissions website. when submitting materials.

Application Due Date

October 15 for spring entry, March 15 for summer entry, June 1 for fall entry

Degree Requirements

The 36-credit Social Foundations M.Ed. offered through the UVA Academic Center in Falls Church, VA is one of the most flexible and versatile graduate degree programs. It is divided into two parts: 18 credits or six “core” required courses and six elective courses. Electives may be selected from three concentrations: social foundations, global education, or education policy. Students may elect to take courses across concentrations or within a single area.  The culminating experience is a comprehensive exam.

Students may apply for federal financial aid through Student Financial Services.

Typical Length of Study

This part-time program is available to working professionals in the Northern Virginia and DC metropolitan areas.  Most students take at least one course during fall and spring semesters and at least two courses during summer sessions, completing requirements in about three years.  Students have five years to complete all requirements, once admitted.

EDLF 7608: Aesthetics and Education OR EDLF 5500: Education, Politics, and Public Policy

EDLF 7701: Reading Seminar in Social Foundations of Education (capstone course, limited to graduating students)
