PG/MT Special Education General Curriculum-Secondary

The Special Education –General Curriculum/Secondary Education Program is designed to prepare candidates for teaching as both special education (with an emphasis on inclusive placements) in preK-12 classrooms and as secondary teachers (6-12th grade) in an academic content area. Prospective teachers complete a curriculum that leads to a Post-graduate Professional licensure and endorsement in both Special Education-General Curriculum and a specific content area of secondary education. In addition to required specialized courses, all students participate in the field practica with experiences across secondary grade levels and in special education placements across elementary to secondary grades.

See the Advising Handbook for TED policies.

Degree Requirements

Students must complete coursework, practica, and assessments required for licensure by the dates listed in the Course Outline that follows.  To earn the MT, students must complete at least 30 graduate credits (course numbers above 5000), not counting Teaching Associateship credits.

In addition, students should apply for licensure and appropriate endorsements in Virginia. These applications should be completed at the same time as the application for graduation and submitted through Curry's Office of Admissions. Virginia's Department of Education will require that students have successfully completed the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA)–2 subtests: reading and writing—by the end of their first year (http://www.va.nesinc.com). Students must also pass the Praxis II content area endorsement test for Virginia offered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and the Virginia Reading Assessment (VRA) offered through Pearson Testing (http://www.va.nesinc.com).
