Although few of you base your taking a job on this figure, I know many of you are interested in knowing it, particularly since you have student loans to pay off (and will sometimes look at a district based on this figure). For those of you who don't have the master's degree, it might be helpful to look at what this figure is since it can help you decide whether it would be worth getting that degree based on the school district of interest (just know that for Alexandria City Schools, the master's degree supplement was $9000—but know that most of them range from $500–$3000 more). When deciding between different schools, it is also important to look at the salary steps involved since some don't go anywhere for awhile (that they use a high “starting”salary as a way to get you but then it just stays there for a couple of years). Most schools realize that the job search is NOT a fun thing for teachers to actively pursue so they literally “bank”on this. So that's why it's important to look at the scales and NOT just the starting salary if you think you might be staying put for awhile.

For the administrators on this listserv, it's ALL about negotiation which was not the case when you were a public school teacher. This misperception has often resulted in accepting a lower salary than you deserve. We recommend a book written by Jack Chapman entitled “How to Negotiate $1000 a Minute: Negotiating Your Salaries & Raises”.
For those of you interested in private/independent schools, there information is not public since these schools want to try to get you for the cheapest price possible. You could check what the local public schools are paying as a beginning step in your salary negotiation process. The Jack Chapman book (listed above) is also a great resource to help you in this stage of your job search.
Some people also use online resources such as Salary.com or Salary Expert (our office buys access to this resource—check with the front desk of our office on getting a report generated in any field of interest).
