Doctoral Admissions

The Ph.D. program prepares scholars who engage in original research.  Students participate in research apprenticeships, assisting their faculty mentors in such activities as conceptualizing research projects, collecting and analyzing data, and writing for publication.

Step 1: Familiarize Yourself

All Ph.D. programs require full-time enrollment.

Programs requirements may vary, be sure to spend time looking over your program page to learn more about additional requirements or deadlines of your program.

Pay special attention to:

Do you need to submit a resume or writing sample?

Are there special requirements for your statement of purpose?

What are the enrollment requirements for your program?

Do you need a Master’s degree in a specific field?

Step 2: Know your deadlines

The Ph.D. application deadline is December 15.

Again, be sure to check out your program page for any additional dates and deadlines.

Step 3: Get to know the faculty

Identification of a core faculty member with interests similar to yours is strongly recommended. It is highly encouraged that you directly contact one or more faculty members to discuss your research interests.  Please contact faculty via email to set up a time to talk either over the phone or in person.

Step 4: Take any required tests and submit your scores to Curry

All graduate students are required to take the GRE within 5 years of application.

  • The average GRE scores for doctoral applicants admitted for the 2016-2017 academic year were 160/84th percentile (verbal), 156/64th percentile (quantitative), 4.5/80th percentile (analytical writing).

    • If your scores are low, we recommend you retake GREs before submitting your application. We will use your highest scores when making admission decisions.

  • Applicants may submit unofficial scores with their application; however, official scores are required prior to matriculation.
  • Official scores should be sent to the University of Virginia; the institutional code is 5820.

All incoming (new) graduate students whose first language is one other than English are required to take the University of Virginia English Language Proficiency Exam unless they have been exempted from TOEFL or IELTS. Applicants who have or will have earned an undergraduate degree from an institution where English is the primary language of instruction do not need to provide TOEFL or IELTS scores.

  • Expected scores:
    • Paper-based TOEFL:  600
    • Computer-Based TOEFL: 250
    • IELTS: 7.0
    • IBT TOEFL: at least 22 in writing, 22 in speaking, 23 in reading, and 23 in listening for a total score of 90.
  • Prospective graduate teaching assistants whose first language is one other than English are required to take the SPEAK Test. A score of at least 55 is required for permission to begin teaching without completion of oral language training. The SPEAK Test is administered in August, December, and May. Candidates for the test are identified by their department. Information about the SPEAK Test is available at www.virginia.edu/provost/caelc.
  • Applicants may submit unofficial scores with their application; however, official scores are required prior to matriculation.

Step 5: Create your account to apply online

Your application process will be managed through our online system. Create an Application Account to begin applying. You can save and return to your application at any point before you click “submit.”  Once an account is created, you can Login to Your Account at any time.

Step 6: Prepare your goal statement

This is your opportunity to describe your understanding of and interest in the program area to which you are applying. The prompt on the application provides additional information you might include.

Step 7: Submit your recommendations

You are required to submit two letters of recommendations. These should be solicited through your online application. At least one of your recommendations should be from a faculty member.

Step 8: Upload your transcripts

Upload into the online application system copies of unofficial transcripts showing college coursework and degrees completed to date. A transcript must be provided for each school listed on your application. Transcripts that are not stated in English must be accompanied by a translation into English. Your application will be considered incomplete until all unofficial transcripts are received. Official transcripts are required only when you accept an offer of admission. Official transcripts may be emailed to gcurryadmission@virginia.edu or mailed to the U.S. Postal address below.

Step 9: Check status of application

Login to your account to check the status of your application or to monitor receipt of recommendations, test scores, and transcripts. Remember, it takes at least 4 weeks for ETS to send us your scores after you take the exam, so plan accordingly to ensure materials reach our office by the application deadline.

The Ed.D. program prepares practitioner-scholars to become leaders within their professions.  Students participate in coursework, research, and field work that focus on the problems faced by educators in schools and other educational institutions.  Students participate in internships that involve the challenges of identifying and developing solutions to the difficulties that educators face on a daily basis.
