Visiting Professor in Reading Ed Arrives from Korea

Duckjee Ryu, Ph.D., a professor at Daegu National University of Education in Korea, has recently arrived at the University of Virginia as a visiting professor to the Curry School of Education. His expertise includes children’s literature and literature education. Together with his wife and his two youngest children, he will live in Charlottesville through February 2013.

Duckjee RyuDuring his year at the Curry School, Ryu will collaborate with Michael McKenna, Thomas G. Jewell Professor of Reading at Curry, to develop a program of literature-based literacy instruction for Korean upper-elementary and middle school students. He is also interested in examining the teacher education program at Curry in order to gather ideas for his own university’s offerings. He will conduct a three-way comparative study of the Common Core State Standards, the Virginia Standards of Learning, and the newly revised 8th Korean National Curriculum of Language Arts.

Professor Ryu is willing to share his experiences and insights with professors and students who are interested in children’s literature and, more broadly, in Korean literacy education. He also hopes to foster collaborations between Curry and Daegu National University, and has offered to help establish contacts in a variety of areas.
