Duckjee Ryu, Ph.D., a professor at Daegu National University of Education in Korea, has recently arrived at the University of Virginia as a visiting professor to the Curry School of Education. His expertise includes children’s literature and literature education. Together with his wife and his two youngest children, he will live in Charlottesville through February 2013.
During his year at the Curry School, Ryu will collaborate with Michael McKenna, Thomas G. Jewell Professor of Reading at Curry, to develop a program of literature-based literacy instruction for Korean upper-elementary and middle school students. He is also interested in examining the teacher education program at Curry in order to gather ideas for his own university’s offerings. He will conduct a three-way comparative study of the Common Core State Standards, the Virginia Standards of Learning, and the newly revised 8th Korean National Curriculum of Language Arts.
