The Book Buddies training workshop is a non-credit course that is offered on-line and will run for 6 weeks with an orientation. It is self-instructional and self-pacing; the instructor, Ms. Donna Lewis-Wagner, is currently a Book Buddies tutoring coordinator in the Charlottesville City Schools and is also one of the authors of the newly updated Book Buddies training manual.
When you finish the workshop, you will know how to set up a Book Buddies tutoring program for first and second graders (although the format can be used for K-3), how to assess children and place them in texts for instruction, how to weave instruction in reading to include phonics/word study and writing--in short, how to be a tutor or how to supervise tutors. This workshop is a must for anyone who wants to assure that children in their care have the best instruction at the earliest possible time, to avoid later reading problems.
The University of Virginia developed Book Buddies in conjunction with the local school district in the early 1990's. Many schools and districts in our state have Book Buddies programs that were started by graduates of the reading education program here at UVa. With this course, you can receive the same training, no matter where you are in the country or world. Learning to read is the most important thing for our children.
