Saturday Enrichment Program

In conjunction with the Curry School of Education Gifted Education Department, the University of Virginia announces the 28th year of the Saturday Enrichment Program. This program serves gifted and/or high ability students who are in K-5th grade. Applications for this program will be available on this website on October 15th, 2012. Please read the application instructions carefully before applying. Remember that if you are applying for more than one child in your family, each child must have a separate, unique application. In order for us to help assign multiple children in one family to the same session, you should also list the other children on each application. We will update this page with more information about the 2013 program when it becomes available. In the meantime, you are welcome to look at what we did in the 2012 program as an example of what to expect in 2013.

January 21st, 28th, February 4th, 11th, and 18th (with the 25th as a snow make-up day).

ACADEMICS

In this program, our goal is to foster interest and a love of learning in a wide variety of fields and disciplines. Curriculum and instruction is designed to engage your child in authentic inquiries into major concepts and ideas of a field through critical, creative, and problem-based thinking/learning. At SEP, we recognize that each student is an individual. To that end, our staff is dedicated to meeting the varying readiness levels, learning preferences, and interests of our students in class. Our classes are taught by doctoral students at both the Curry School of Education and other departments across grounds as well as local teachers who have a specialty in gifted education. As a whole, our staff is dynamic, enthusiastic, and excited about working with these young scholars.

HOW TO APPLY

The easiest way to apply to the Saturday Enrichment Program is online here. Before you begin, please read all the instructions below. Applications are due December 1, 2011. Remember that each child in a family needs a separate application.

How to Apply Online:

1) Decide which location you would like your child to attend. Classes are offered in two locations this year: in Charlottesville and in Fauquier County. Review the classes offered at your location for students in your child’s grade:

Charlottesville Courses                         Fauquier Courses

2) Obtain the email address of the teacher you wish to recommend your child. It is a very good idea to test the email address first, before you enter it into this application. The wrong email address will delay the application. If you know you have the correct address because you have successfully emailed the teacher in the past, we advise copy/pasting their address into the form to make sure there are no typos.

3) Click on the application link below. Create an account using the primary email address for your family. Enter your child’s name and choose a password. If you have more than one child applying, you will create separate accounts for each. You can use the same email address and password as long as each child’s name is different. You must create a new account every year - we do not save any information from the previous year.

4) Identify which location and grade you are applying to. If applying to the Charlottesville location, you will also be asked to choose the early or the late class or indicate that either is acceptable.

5) Answer all required elements on the application page. Please include a cell phone number or phone number where we can reach you on Saturday mornings in case of emergency. Indicate which classes your child would like to attend, in the order that they prefer. You can prioritize them all, or indicate “not interested” if there is a class your child definitely would not enjoy. This page will time out after approximately 1.5 hours. If that happens to you, just exit and sign back in to your account. When completed, proceed to the Parent Evaluation.

6) Answer questions on the Parent Evaluation about your child’s interests and learning styles and submit this form.

7) Your status page will now appear, with a status of ‘pending’. Click on the link to the teacher recommendation form and enter the name and email address of the teacher who will provide the recommendation for your child. If you don’t have that information yet, you can return to your status page any time and add this information. The teacher will then receive an email automatically, and will be able to respond quickly and easily with their comments. Right now a message appears after you have requested the teacher recommendation instructing you to return to the status page to pay the application fee. This message was intended only for our Summer program, and the engineer is working on removing it for applicants to the Saturday program, but it may take a few days. We apologize for the confusion! For the Saturday program, there is nothing to pay until after the child has been accepted.

At this point the application is complete. You will receive an email acknowledging our receipt of the application and a second email letting you know when the teacher completes their recommendation. Applications are due by December 1, 2011, including the teacher recommendation. We will notify you of acceptance decisions on or before December 19, 2011.

Electronic applications will be available HERE on October 15th, 2012.
