Big Idea: Cornell notes are a wonderful tool for helping students organize and process information.
Class Context: Cornell notes can work in a variety of contexts…during lecture, watching a video. Students will take notes in one section, extract questions for the notes in another, and summarize the notes.
Have you used this tool in class?: Yes
Procedural Steps: Go through and explicitly teach the steps for taking Cornell notes. I used a powerpoint to go over why we take notes and some tips for beneficial note-taking. Then we talked about Cornell notes format. Then, distribute handouts, you can even model using the format. To get students started, you can fill in parts of the notes to guide their note-taking
Materials Needed: Copies of the Cornell notes form (attached).
