Lesson Plan on RAFT writing

Plan Type: _X_ Full-detail Plan ___ Idea Plan

Big Idea

Freerice.com is a neat way for students to show compassion by donating rice through the UN to hungry people. It’s a fun, educational activity that demonstrate how “service” doesn’t necessarily mean physically going out and building houses for people or donating time. It can be something as simple as this game. The RAFT writing activity at the end of the game completes the activity by asking students to justify the use (or ban) of the website.

Objectives

Students will understand

  • that we can show compassion and provide service in a variety of ways.

Students will know

  • how the UN uses freerice.com to fight world hunger.
  • how to answer vocabulary questions and “win” rice on freerice.com
  • how to complete a RAFT writing exercise.

Students will be able to

  • answer vocabulary questions to “win” rice through freerice.com
  • justify either using freerice.com or not using the website in a RAFT writing exercise.

The goal of the Currypedia section of the blog is to archive easy-to-use, easy-to-read lesson plans in a permanent database that you can take with you to your future teaching career. It’s a place for you to post lesson plans that you’ve already created for your content area class.

Simply log in to your account, find ‘Lesson Plans’ on the left sidebar, and click ‘Add New.’  Easy!

A few reminders:

1. Go through the form and copy/paste your plan’s sections into the form boxes. Do not just attach your lesson plan.

2. Don’t forget to assign your plan to a category based on your content area, and check off any tags that you think apply to the content of your plan.

3. If the form doesn’t meet your needs for whatever reason, contact curryed_away@virginia.edu

4. Have fun, post often, and check out your colleagues’ contributions!
