Reading@Curry Non-Credit Workshops and Academy

Workshops

These half-day workshops were developed under grant funding. They are now available by contract to interested school divisions. They have been extremely successful with teachers.  Teachers leave each workshop with ten activities/work stations they can put to use in their classrooms the very next day!  Topics covered in the workshops are:

  1. Phonological Awareness and Literacy Workstations (Grades K-1)
  2. Phonics ( Grades 1-3)
  3. Fluency and Phonics (Grades 1-3)
  4. Comprehension (Grades K-3)

Reading Academy for Teachers of Struggling Readers

This four-day non-credit academy is designed for teachers of all grade levels who teach reading. Topics include an overview of literacy development, characteristics of each developmental stage, using assessment to guide instruction, phonemic awareness and phonics, word study instruction, strategies to build vocabulary and comprehension, and connecting writing to the literacy curriculum.  The academy was first offered through Reading First in Virginia.  Now it is available to school divisions by contract only.
