Literacy Academy

(Formerly known as the Academy for Teachers of Struggling Readers)

 

 

 

 

 

This four-day non-credit academy is designed for teachers of all grade levels who teach reading. Topics include an overview of literacy development, characteristics of each developmental stage, using assessment to guide instruction, phonemic awareness and phonics, word study instruction, strategies to build vocabulary and comprehension, and connecting writing to the literacy curriculum.  The academy was first offered through Reading First in Virginia.  This is the first time it is being offered as an open enrollment workshop.

Location: Ruffner Hall, Charlottesville, VA

Dates: June 19-22, 2017  Time: 9-4:30, M-Th

Cost: $620 per person

In order to enroll in the EDNC 4501 Literacy Academy,  please follow the directions below:

  1. Fill out the online Permission to Enroll form found at http://curry.virginia.edu/pteform. (Please note that the form sometimes does not load properly; if you have issues, try refreshing the page or try to open it in a different browser. When filling out this form, you need to note that this course is being taken NOT for credit at the Curry School of Education and therefore you should not need to answer state residency questions. )
  2. Within 24-48 hours of successfully submitting the form, you should receive an email from UVa with a computing ID, a student ID number  and directions for activating your email and UVA account.  Save this email for your records. If you do not receive an email within this time frame please write to curry-admissions@virginia.edu.  
  3. Login to the UVA SIS www.virginia.edu/sis using your newly activated account.  In the student center, you will see an enroll link. Select the Summer term 2017.  In your enrollment shopping cart enter class number 12447 and then click on enter. This course (EDNC 4501 Literacy Academy) will show up in your shopping cart.  Now, select the course in your shopping cart and then click enroll. Make sure you complete all steps so that this class shows in My Class Schedule.  *Charges typically appear after one day and then you can pay in the SIS.
