	    	    <![CDATA[<p>In response to the 2011 Virginia School Safety Audit survey, 98 percent of schools reported making a special effort to reduce bullying last year, ranging from a formal bullying prevention program to holding a school assembly. &#8220;I&#8217;m sure that 10 years ago we wouldn&#8217;t have seen [that] percent of the school principals responding in that way,” said Dewey Cornell, bullying expert, <a href="http://curry.virginia.edu/youth-nex">Youth-Nex</a> Associate Director, and Professor of Education at the University of Virginia.</p>

Women&#8217;s Center to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Young Women Leaders&#8217; Program.&nbsp; </p>

	    	    <![CDATA[<p>At the final <a href="http://curry.virginia.edu/youth-nex">Youth-Nex</a> WIP talk of the semester Amanda Kibler and Sophie Trawalter presented their preliminary findings, &#8220;Languages Across Borders: Building Positive Cross-Linguistic and Cross-Cultural Networks in High Schools.&#8221;</p>

<p>This presentation examined preliminary outcomes for a yearlong out-of-school dual language enrichment program that aims to improve linguistic and psychosocial outcomes for both Spanish-speaking adolescent learners of English and English-speaking adolescent learners of Spanish. Implications for models of second language acquisition and positive youth development was explored. <a href="http://curry.virginia.edu/resource-library/languages-across-borders-youth-nex-works-in-progress-audio">Listen</a> to the presentation. 	    	    <![CDATA[<p><img src="http://curry.virginia.edu/uploads/articleImages/YWLP_luncheon_program_flowers.jpg" alt="YWLP Luncheon Program" height="220" width="220"  />May 8, 2012 — The Young Women Leaders Program – a collaboration between the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education and the U.Va. Women’s Center to help mentor local middle-school girls – officially marked its 15th anniversary.</p>

<p>The program, established in 1997, pairs seventh- and eighth-grade girls from the Charlottesville and Albemarle areas with female mentors who are U.Va. students. More than 1,000 girls and 1,000 college women have taken part, said the program’s director, Edith “Winx” Lawrence, a Curry School professor.</p>

	    	    <![CDATA[<p>May 8, 2012—Yesterday and today, the <a href="http://curry.virginia.edu/castl">Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning </a>is hosting a small group of school district administrators and higher education stakeholders from various local and national locations, including Kansas, New York, and Hawaii. These administrators represent districts who are early adopters of the <a href="http://curry.virginia.edu/research/centers/castl/class">Classroom Assessment Scoring System</a>™ observational tool and the <a href="http://curry.virginia.edu/research/centers/castl/mtp">MyTeacherPartner</a>™ coaching program.</p>

<p>“It has been our practice to solicit feedback from the people who use these tools at every stage of their development,” said Bridget Hamre, associate director of CASTL. “Especially now, as district begin to scale up the use of these tools, we need to fully understand district needs and how we can best support them.” This meeting brings researchers and educators together promoting CASTL&#8217;s mission to bridge research and practice throughout the educational system. </p>

<p>The meeting is funded by a grant from William T. Grant Foundation.</p>

	    	    <![CDATA[<p><strong>Larry Edward Decker, </strong>72, passed away April 23, 2012, at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville. Decker was a professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from 1973 to 1995 in the Curry School of Education and the Director of the Center for Community Education. For eight years, he was also and associate dean for administration. In 1995 he moved to Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida, where he worked until his retirement.</p>

<p>A Memorial Service will be held in his honor on Saturday, May 12, at 2 p.m. at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church on Emmet Street followed by a Farewell Reception in Newcomb Hall.</p>]]>

	    	    <![CDATA[<p>The <a href="http://curry.virginia.edu/research/labs/youth-violence-project">Youth Violence Project</a>, headed by Curry Professor and <a href="http://curry.virginia.edu/youth-nex">Youth-Nex</a> associate director, Dewey Cornell, reports school homicides have been on the decline since 1993. Between the worst 10-year period, from 1992-2002, a student came onto school property and killed someone an average of 9.3 times a year in a nation averaging nearly 100,000 schools. </p>
