Faculty in the News


Recently, members of the Curry faculty have been sought by media outlets to serve as experts in their fields, have published new findings, books and articles.

Dean Bob Pianta was featured in the June 13th New York Times Room for Debate discussing the appropriate age for entering kindergarten.  He also discussed the prek-3 movement, the notion of coordinating curricula from preschool through third grade, in the Education Week article Advocates See Pre-K-3 as Key Early Education Focus.

Curry Professor Dewey Cornell is once again a featured expert in the discussion of the appropriate nature of relocating students from one school to another as a means of discipline in the Washington Post article Fairfax may reexamine forced school transfers in discipline cases. He also discusses his research on expulsion as a form of discipline in the Virginian Pilot article Data: School discipline varies widely in Hampton Roads.

Curry Professor Carolyn Callahan and Assistant Professor Holly Hertberg-Davis recently studied the Destination ImaginNation programs impacts on the the youth who participate in the academic competition.  Their research showed that students who participated in the program measured higher in creative and critical thinking that students who did not. 

Faculty publications

Michael McKenna, recently published Issues and Trends in Literacy Education (5th Edition).  Along with Curry graduate Kristin Contradi and fellow author Dick Robinson, McKenna has compiled “the research and opinions of some of today’s leading literacy educators to give readers an authoritative look at all crucial aspects of reading and writing education.

Ann Boyce, recently published four articles.  The Introduction and Overview: A Multifaceted Examination of the Status of PETE Doctoral Programs in the United States, Characteristics of PETE Doctoral Level Institutions: Descriptions of Programs, Faculty and Doctoral Students, A Comparison of Supply and Demand for
PETE Professionals in Higher Education in the United States
, and The Doctorate in Physical Education Teacher Education in the 21st Century: Contexts and Challenges were all published in the Journal of Teaching Physical Education.
