The Curry School of Education joins the family and friends of Howard “Hank” Allen (Ed.D ’73 C&I) in mourning the passing of this alumnus, faculty emeritus, and distinguished leader in the Curry School. Allen died Friday, June 22, 2012, in Charlottesville.
His funeral will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, June 28 at Mt. Zion First African Baptist Church, 105 Lankford Avenue, Charlottesville, VA. On Wednesday, June 27th, there will be a Wake from 6:30-7:30 at the church. The Xi Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi (his fraternity) will hold their Omega Service at 7:30 pm. Burial will be at Holly Memorial Gardens, 3251 Seminole Trail, Charlottesville, VA following the funeral.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Howard W. Allen Award administered through the Curry School of Education Foundation, PO Box 400276, Charlottesville, VA 22904-4276.
Allen was a key member of the Consultative Resource Center for School Desegregation at the Curry School (also known as the Curry Desegregation Center). He and colleague James Bash were recently honored for their contributions to the center, and a plaque memorializing their work was placed in the Bavaro Hall atrium.
