In this Goal 2 IES Development project we are developing materials and procedures to implement a comprehensive social competence intervention in Head Start classrooms that is based on Positive Behavior Support (PBS). The three intervention components provide increasing child support:

  • Component 1: Universal PBS strategies are implemented classroom wide (e.g., classroom rules, room arrangement, transition procedures).
  • Component 2: Social Pragmatic Storybook Intervention teaches social skills to all children using storybooks, theme toys, and teacher instruction during play, supporting children with greater needs.
  • Component 3: Individualized PBS strategies address select children for whom the first two components have not been successful and include functional behavioral assessment and teaching replacement behaviors.

Across five Head Start programs, the intervention was applied to five classroom teams during year 2 and to 10 classroom teams during year 3.  Dependent measures include child and teacher data, classroom assessments, social validity, and fidelity of implementation.
