Toward an Understanding of Classroom Context
In 2008, the Educational Testing Service, the University of Virginia, and the RAND Corporation were awarded a three-year grant to explore the best practices in implementing the secondary school version of the Classroom Assessment Scoring System™ (CLASS-S), a promising observational instrument that measures student-teacher interactions.
This study has three primary goals:
1. Continue to develop and refine a theoretically driven and well-researched Classroom Assessment Scoring System™ for secondary settings.
2. Determine the validity and reliability of this system for secondary classrooms.
3. Understand the relationships among classroom characteristics, processes and outcomes.
The CLASS-S is an observation system that focuses on instructional support, emotional support, and classroom organization. The study will explore the measurement characteristics of CLASS-S and how CLASS-S scores relate to other measures used in the study.
