Instructions for How to Become Tutor

Attend an orientation session at the beginning of the semester.  If no orientation sessions are scheduled, complete the application found on this website and email it to the America Reads Coordinator.  The coordinator will schedule and interview with you and discuss placements.  Tutoring placements are usually made within 2 weeks of applying to America Reads.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Am I guaranteed a Job?

No, you must attend a training/orientation session and meet with the America Reads Coordinator.  If you are a good match for the program, the coordinator will place you in a school that matches as closely as possible your schedule and transportation needs.

Do I need any special training?

No, you will receive some training, and a great deal of on the job guidance and support.  You need to be enthusiastic about working with children, interested in helping struggling readers, and willing to learn.

Can you check my financial aid status?

No, it is the student’s job to apply for financial aid and work-study via the FAFSA form.  It is also the student’s responsibility to make sure wages earned do not surpass the work-study award.

Will I need any special documents?

Yes – you will need to complete a W4 form, a Virginia tax form, and an I9.  For the I9 you will need either a valid passport, OR a drivers license AND birth certificate (other forms of ID are indicated on the I9 form)

I am graduating in December, can I still participate?

Yes, just make sure you clearly communicate this to the coordinator.  If there is a tutor placement that will accommodate a one-semester commitment this is possible.

I am student teaching in the fall but would like to participate in the spring.

Great – get in touch with the America Reads Coordinator as soon as possible and complete and application.

I already have one work-study job, can I also do America Reads?

Yes.  But it is your responsibility to make sure that you do not work MORE than your work-study award.  For example, if your work-study award is $1000 per semester, you cannot earn more than that from your combined job earnings.

How far are the sites from grounds?

It varies.  There are a few schools within walking/biking/bus distance.  We try to reserve those schools for students without transportation.  In the past tutors working at the same schools have arranged carpools among themselves.

Do I have to work over UVA holidays?

No, but the public schools deeply appreciate it.  Just be sure you communicate clearly with your cooperating teacher your plans for UVA holidays.

Are there afterschool hours that I can work?

There are many afterschool tutoring programs we recruit tutors for.

What if I get sick or have to cancel a session?

You need to contact your cooperating teacher as soon as possible so they know not to expect you.

Can I work over the summer?

No, America Reads does not offer work-study over the summer sessions.

Can I work more hours over spring break and winter break?

Yes, you can work up to 40 hours a week those week, but again, you cannot earn more than your work-study award.
