Upcoming Talks
Each year, we sponsor several speakers as part of the Curry Education Research Lectureship Series. In 2011, these speakers will include Chris Hulleman, Jessaca Spybrook, and Richard Lerner. For details about these and other talks in the series, please see the speakers series page.
Also, the Center on Education Policy and Workforce Competitiveness sponsors talks every other Monday at noon in Ruffner 200. Please see the schedule for details.
Workshops
Upcoming workshops are listed below and may be open to individuals outside of VEST dependent upon space. Please email Denise Strickland to inquire about availability. VEST fellows are expected to attend.
Hierarchical Linear Modeling
Allison Atteberry, May 29-31 (9AM-3PM with noon-1PM lunch break), Ruffner 121
This three-day short course will introduce users to the basics of hierarchical linear models. We will discuss the structure of basic models, including 2-level organizational models and 3-level models for individual change. We will also cover how-to's for setting up and executing these models starting from typical Stata (or SPSS) data files through the program HLM. I will also teach users how to execute these models using Stata in a more efficient fashion. Advanced topics will be covered and discussed on the final day, tailored to the interests of the participants.
Mediation and Moderation
Ross Larsen & Tashia Abry, June 11-14
This workshop will cover issues surrounding mediation and moderation. We will introduce conceptual definitions as well as statistical techniques for modeling/testing mediation and moderation in MPLUS and SPSS. Topics will include testing model assumptions, interpreting results, graphing/presenting findings, calculating effect sizes, and modeling complexities including multiple mediators and mediation and moderation in multi-level models. On the final day of the workshop, we will be available for consulting related to any topics covered in class. Example data will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring a data set they are familiar with in addition for use during guided activities.
