CHILD PROBLEM BEHAVIOR AND TEACHER WELLBEING: THE VALUE OF A RELATIONSHIP PERSPECTIVE

The importance of teacher-student relationships for the development of children has been amply demonstrated. Much less is known about how these relationships impact the professional and personal lives of teachers. The notion of mental representations of relationships could offer a window to understand how individual teacher–student relationships may affect the self-esteem of teachers and why student misbehavior generates teaching stress. A relationship perspective would also affect the focus of interventions. Dr. Koomen will share ideas and findings from recent review studies and her empirical research and will discuss implications for the research agenda as well as for the professional support of teachers.
