Clinical & School Psychology

The Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology prepares students to make substantial contributions to the field of psychology. You will gain knowledge of what affects behavioral systems and individual functioning, especially in learning and family environments, in addition to a grounding in many areas of psychological development. Counselor Education

The Curry School Counselor Education Program is unique for two important reasons – the exceptionally high student engagement and mentorship of the faculty, and the strong focus of in-school experience. You will learn how to become a culturally competent counselor who advocates vigorously for students ages pre-K–16, and use research and an evidence-based approaches to develop comprehensive programs that challenge the status quo. Ed Psych - Applied Developmental Science

This program focuses on improving the social and cognitive lives of children and adolescents. EP-ADS students learn theory and engage in hands-on research experiences that examine how school and out-of-school settings influence learning and development. Students also engage in developing and evaluating interventions designed to support children and youth. Graduates from the program leave Curry prepared for educational science careers in academic, policy and research organizations.

Foreign Language Education

Teaching foreign language can be vastly rewarding, both in terms of the impact you have on your students and the value it creates for your own career. A Teacher Education Foreign Language degree opens several job opportunities. Our one-year PGMT degree allows you to teach in middle or high school.  M.Ed. and Ed.S. graduates teach foreign languages or are involved in the curriculum and instruction of foreign language programs at secondary and post-secondary institutions. Many of our Ed.D. graduates have gone on to positions in PreK-12 settings, higher education, foundations, NGOs and government agencies.

Gifted Education

All students have gifts, but some have exceptional strengths. However, gifted students aren’t always identified and their abilities understood. Reading Education

Reading is the foundation of all learning. As such, reading educators provide students with the means to succeed, in school and in life. There is no better place to become a Reading educator than the nationally recognized Reading Education program at the Curry School. Graduates of our program teach children in elementary and secondary classrooms, coach colleagues in exemplary schools, train future teachers in colleges and universities, and conduct research. Research, Statistics & Evaluation

When you graduate from Curry’s Research, Statistics & Evaluation (RSE) program, you will have gained an understanding of historical and philosophical foundations of educational research, methodological expertise in multiple modes of disciplined inquiry, and practical experience under the guidance of a mentor to design and conduct research. Most of our students choose to develop a plan of study with a focus in quantitative methods, qualitative methods, or program evaluation to match their career goals. Science Education

Whether you decide to teach science or develop curriculum that will inspire more students to enter into science careers, you’ll never be bored. New advances in science are being made daily as our knowledge base and technologies increase. Social Foundations of Education

In the Social Foundations program, you will examine issues that reach beyond the given roles and goals of educational specialists and practitioners and delve into the complex interrelationships between school and society as well as education and culture. Discover how schools are viewed as social organizations having policies that affect and are affected by collective intellectual perspectives. Because Social Foundations provides a broad understanding of education in its larger dimensions, this program can be described as the “humanities of education.”  Graduates pursue careers in elementary through higher education teaching, in policy-related functions in schools and school systems, and in various research and governmental agencies.

Special Education

The Curry School's Special Education program prepares you to become a teacher, consultant, clinician or a teacher educator and researcher who can promote the application of evidence-based practices to the service of children and youth with special education needs. Speech Communications Disorders

Communication skills affect not only learning, but also everyday quality of life. By helping those who struggle with various speech communication disorders, Speech Language Pathologists, Audiologists and those involved with research provide an invaluable service. At the Curry School, we offer three Speech Communication Disorders degrees taught by high-caliber, collaborative scientists. Students receive a large amount of practical, hands-on experience through our clinic Sheila C. Johnson Center. This program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

Youth & Social Innovation

Embark on a career doing meaningful work with, or on behalf of, youth. With its dual emphasis on rigorous academic preparation and innovative skill-building, this program prepares graduates for careers in both the private and nonprofit sectors.     On-grounds, this state-approved educator preparation program blends full-time Curry coursework and on-going school-based experiences in Charlottesville and surrounding counties in a structured plan of study leading to a Master of Teaching degree.

  • Master of Education

    The Master of Education (MEd) degree focuses on advanced training in disciplines related to education.

  • Education Specialist

    The Education Specialist degree is a planned 30-credit (minimum) post-master’s program in which candidates are expected to attain a broad and systematic understanding of professional education, a definitive knowledge of a particular field of specialization, and an ability to integrate and apply theoretical concepts of education in an actual educational context.

  • Doctor of Education

    The Ed.D. program prepares practitioner-scholars to become leaders within their professions. Students participate in coursework, research, and field work that focus on the problems faced by educators in schools and other educational institutions.

  • Doctor of Philosophy

    The Ph.D. program prepares scholars who engage in original research. Students participate in research apprenticeships, assisting their faculty mentors in such activities as conceptualizing research projects, collecting and analyzing data, and writing for publication.
