Application Steps by Program


  • Kinesiology

    The Kinesiology program is a pre-professional program for students interested in graduate study in such areas as athletic training, nutrition, physical therapy, medicine, and public health. Kinesiology also provides the training for entry-level jobs in coaching, work with individuals with disabilities, or work in personal fitness/wellness centers.

    High School Students

    Step 1: Visit Us

    If you are interested in visiting us and finding out more about our Kinesiology program, please contact David Edwards (dae7c@virginia.edu).  Tell him you are interested in attending one of the information sessions listed on the page linked below.  If for some reason none of the dates fit your summer plans, email him anyway and he'll see what he can do!

    Once you have chosen a date, contact Prof. Edwards for directions and to RSVP.

    Also check out the tours offered through the undergraduate admissions office.  Taken together the tour of grounds with our Kinesiology specific tour, should give you most of the information you need to decide if UVA is the fit for you! Contact undergraduate admissions to make your reservations for their on grounds tour. http://admission.virginia.edu/visit

    Step 2: Pay attention to Deadlines

    The deadline for applying for regular decision is January 1.

    Step 3: Submit your application

    Apply to the Curry School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia through the Office of Undergraduate Admission.  U.Va. accepts only the Common Application (Common App) for both first year and transfer admission.  The Common App is available on August 1.  Visit the Common App Online to begin your application. 

    Step 4: Prepare Financially

    Submit your FAFSA online and visit the Student Financial Services office to learn more about paying for college.

    Current UVA Students

    If you're a current UVA student, applying to the Kinesiology program is easy! Follow the steps below:

    Step 1: Make sure your current courses are preparing you to transfer:

    Applicants should be in excellent academic standing and should be well on their way to completing their general education requirements including BIOL 2100/2200, BIOL 3410/3420, and calculus.

    Step 2: Complete your application

    The deadline for applying is February 1.

    Submit an application for transfer into the Curry School's Kinesiology program.

     

    Transfer Students from Another University

  • Speech Communications Disorders

    High School Students

    The bachelor's degree in Speech Communication Disorders is open to undergraduate students already enrolled at the University of Virginia. UVA students apply to the Curry School of Education and Human Development by February 1 of their second year at UVA. Admitted students complete their third and fourth years in the Curry School, earning a B.S.Ed. Because this is a pre-professional program, students typically go on to earn a master’s degree, so they can become licensed speech pathologists.

    Current UVA Students

    The bachelor's degree in Speech Communication Disorders is open to undergraduate students already enrolled at the University of Virginia.  Students apply to the Curry School of Education and Human Development by February 1 of their second year at UVA. Admitted students complete their third and fourth years in the Curry School, earning a B.S.Ed. Because this is a pre-professional program, students typically go on to earn a master’s degree, so they can become licensed speech pathologists.

    Step 5: Next Steps

    After you’ve applied, you can expect an admission decision within 30 days of the February 1 deadline.

  • Teacher Education

    High School Students

    The bachelor's degree in Teacher Education is open to undergraduate students who have completed one or two years of post-secondary coursework. Students apply to the Curry School of Education and Human Development by February 1 of their first or second year. Admitted students complete their remaining years of study in the Curry School, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education in either Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, or Special Education. Students who successfully complete a Teacher Education major and the full-time teaching internship (student teaching) are eligible for a professional teaching license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

    Undergraduate Students at UVA

    Step 1: Attend an Information Session

    The Curry School hosts information sessions for prospective students throughout the year. A list of upcoming sessions can be found here.

    Step 2: Review your Transcript

    Teacher Education applicants must be on track to complete the Teacher Education general studies requirements, which are a bit more specific than the general studies requirements from the College or Curry. Although you do not need to have all requirements done in advance, it is recommended you are nearly finished with:

    • 6 credits of English/composition
    • 6 credits of mathematics (one course must be a 2000-level statistics course)
    • 6 credits of natural science (courses must be from two different departments; options include astronomy, biology, chemistry, environmental science, and physics)
    • 6 credits of humanities
    • 3 credits of United States history
    • 3 credits of child development (PSYC 2700: Child Development, EDLF 3150: Introduction to Child Growth and Development, or EDIS 3040: Foundations of Early Childhood Development and Education)
    • 3 additional credits of social science

    AP credit can be applied toward these requirements if the credit appears on your UVA transcript.

    Step 3: Apply by February 1 of your first or second year

    Complete the internal transfer application. You must declare a major (early childhood education, elementary education, or special education) when applying.

    Transfer Students

    Step 1: Review the Admissions Requirements

    Review the Curry School of Education transfer requirements.

    Step 2: Apply through the Common Application

    Apply to UVA through the Common Application. Be sure to adhere to application deadlines. The Teacher Education program only admits students for fall entry. You must indicate the Curry School of Education and Human Development as your school choice. You must also declare a major (early childhood education, elementary education, or special education) when applying.

  • Youth and Social Innovation

    High School Students

    The bachelor's degree in Youth & Social Innovation is open to undergraduate students already enrolled at the University of Virginia. UVA students apply to the Curry School of Education and Human Development by February 1 before their 3rd year at UVA.

    Current UVA Students

    Current UVA Students should apply to the YSI program before their 3rd year.

    Step 1: Visit Us

    Schedule a campus tour, and meet with faculty members to learn more about the Youth & Social Innovation program

    Step 2: Pay attention to Deadlines

    You must apply by February 1st.

    Step 3: Submit your application to the Curry School

    Submit an application for transfer into the Curry School's Youth and Social Innovation program.

    Step 4: Next Steps

    After you've applied, you can expect to receive a letter of decision from Curry within 30 days of the February 1 deadline.
