Alexandra is a Speech Communication Disorders major with a minor in American Sign Language. She is from Smithfield, Virginia.
My academic experience in the Curry School has been amazing! Everyone in Curry is so helpful and passionate about learning. I can always find someone who wants to study, go over a difficult reading, or just hang out.
Outside of class, I am in Gamma Phi Beta, a sorority here on Grounds. I also volunteer at the LGBTQ center in Newcomb, and I am involved in NSSLHA, the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association, as a social coordinator. I am a member of DEAFS, Deaf Education and Awareness for Students, the ASL / Deaf Culture club here on grounds. Between school and working two jobs, I do not have a ton of time for hobbies, but I really love going out to eat and trying new food. Especially here in Cville, there are so many cool places to try. I also really like going to drag shows, and I really like to travel when I can.
After graduation, I want to go to graduate school to get my master's in Speech Language Pathology and become a certified SLP. My dream is to work with hearing children from Deaf families for whom ASL is their first language, so their English acquisition is not fully developed. I want to work with them to become fluent English speakers while still acknowledging their Deaf identity. That is a very specific field, so I will be happy to work with any kiddos who have speech and communication issues because no matter how they communicate (spoken English, ASL, augmentative and alternative communication, etc.), the ability to communicate is a right we should all have.
What I love most about the Curry School is everyone's passion for people. Everyone here is working in a field that involves making others' lives better. I think that is something very admirable and it is a community I am proud to be a part of.
