Emma Doody

Emma is a Youth & Social Innovation Major from Goochland, Virginia. She will also be completing her master's degree in Elementary Education through the Curry School's five-year B/MT program.

412x412_Emma_square.jpgMy academic experience in Curry has been super hands-on and exciting so far. I have loved the different projects I have worked on, the field experiences I have gotten in classrooms and other settings, and the innovative ideas I have been tasked to create for real world problems. I love how known I feel and I love how personable the professors and students are. It is, in my opinion, unlike any other academic community I have experienced at UVA. It is cozy and welcoming, and it is a place that makes me and my aspirations feel valued and important.

Outside of Curry, I have been actively involved in Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship since arriving my first-year. I am also involved in Young Women Leaders Program. I served as a Big Sister to a 7th grade girl this past year, and will be serving in a Facilitator Role for Little and Big sisters this year. I also serve on the Youth and Social Innovation Mentoring and Advising Committee to help plan and facilitate events for incoming YSI students and advising opportunities for current ones. In the past, I have also participated with Madison House at Barrett Early Learning Center and the Virginia Discovery Museum. I also love serving incoming UVA students through the Greeters program and through Days on the Lawn.

I love to run, and I like to participate in local races for fun. I also enjoy about anything outdoors, from hikes with friends, finding new swimming holes, and gardening/planting flowers back at my home. I love to do all sorts of arts and crafts. My favorites are probably painting, ceramics, and crafts for my apartment. I can easily be found at any UVA sports event, and I am a hardcore UVA basketball fan. I love to spend endless hours at JPJ waiting to get the best seat in the house for the Hoos. Hanging out with friends is how I spend most of my weekends, from exploring new places to eat around Charlottesville, having fun movie nights, and cooking new meals.

After graduation, I hope to teach in an elementary school, although I am not sure exactly where or what grade yet. Eventually, I think I would like to work in a non-profit or with incarcerated youth, but that will all depend on where life leads me.
