Dual Language Immersion: Benefits for English Learner (EL) and Non-EL Populations


This exploratory study aims to understand whether dual language immersion programs improve children self-regulation development, and whether improved language and self-regulation outcomes are associated with academic growth. In particular, the study will present a unique opportunity to examine the characteristics of quality instruction that supports the early academic achievement of ELs. By studying dual language immersion programs, the present study has the potential to contribute to our understanding of how to effectively reduce achievement gaps between EL and non-EL students. Additionally, the study has the potential of identifying components of instructional quality that are useful for leveraging ELs’ self-regulation and bilingualism.
