Gerry joined the Curry School as of February 15, 2016. Previously, he served as the senior associate dean and chief operating officer at the Darden School of Business and as a member of its Technology and Operations Management area. From 2001 to 2013, he served in various roles at UVA's McIntire School of Commerce, including as senior associate dean for administration, with responsibility as chief operating officer and chief financial officer. He also has served as executive director of the McIntire School Foundation and as a member of the UVA School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Foundation.

Gerry has a joint appointment as an associate professor on the general faculty in Curry's Higher Education program. At Darden and McIntire, he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on project management and leadership and will teach in Curry's Higher Education department with a focus on Leadership in Intercollegiate Athletics. In 2013, he received a teaching award from the Seven Society noting "...his balance between teaching, research and administrative leadership..." and "excellence in the fields of commerce and business."
