Joey Carls joined the Curry School of Education as the Dean's Office Administrator in August 2013. Joey has the primary responsibility for the day to day operations of the dean's office which includes management of school leadership supports, major events, finance and budget, building operations, safety and security, and space planning. He also supports faculty affairs through coordination of the promotion and tenure reviews of faculty, annual faculty elections, and annual faculty award submissions. Joey works closely with deans, chairs, staff, committees and others to establish workflow and track progress toward key outcomes. He is in his second three-year term as Curry's representative to the U.Va. Security and General Safety Committee.
Prior to working with the University of Virginia and Curry School of Education, Joey worked for seven years at George Mason University with experience in office administration, financial policy and training, procurement, human resources, facility operations, and fundraising. He also served as a member of Mason's Staff Senate from 2008-2013, serving two terms as the chair and representing classified staff on numerous university committees.
Joey was certified as a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician in 2016 and an AHA-BLS educator in 2018. He volunteers his time as an associate-medical member of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad where he also serves as a member of the board of directors and the agency's treasurer.
