Stress, anxiety and mental health issues are increasing in children and adults. How can the science of stress help us improve our resilience, behavior and achievement?
Two researchers from the Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning (CASTL)— Jason Downer, CASTL director, and Tish Jennings, associate research professor at the Curry School of Education—illuminate the science behind stress at Learning & the Brain’s Educating Mindful Minds conference April 19-21 in New York.
At the conference, Downer and Jennings will present research aimed at helping teachers reduce stress—which an overwhelming 46 percent of U.S. teachers express experiencing high levels of daily—and implement mindfulness and social-emotional learning programs in the classroom, and consequently, improve well-being and achievement.
With a focus on strengthening social-emotional skills, Downer’s session addresses how work stress and teacher-student interactions play an important role in managing disruptive behaviors in the classroom for early career teachers.
In a session dedicated to staff burnout and retention, Tish Jennings speaks about how mindfulness approaches, such as meditation, can help teachers manage stress and enhance teaching and learning by creating positive environments.
Jennings will also share mindfulness practices that teachers can use to manage their stress and share with students to support learning.
